In the heart of Lane Cove, near our Lane Cove head office is a vibrant new community precinct – The Canopy.
The Canopy was delivered by ADCO Construction in July 2020. The project involved redeveloping the existing Rosenthal Car Park into a new 4-level car park with underground parking with rooftop retail precinct and open space.
Underpinning the design inspiration by Arcadia Landscape Architecture, with delivery by Scott Carver, is the integration between the built form and the landscape – a combination of commercial activation and civic responsibility that has retained the village atmosphere.
The car park rooftop includes a restaurant area with indoor and outdoor seating and an amphitheatre. There is play equipment with BBQ facilities and amenities, and extensive landscaping with a ‘green wall’ vertical garden and a footbridge to provide pedestrian connectivity.
Glascott managed the installation of the playground equipment, street furniture, and created picnic areas, pathways, and the green spaces. Careful attention was made to sculpting the finished levels to maximise seating opportunities in front of the ampitheatre stage. Selecting turf underlay with high drainage properties that will contain the rainfall within the turf area was critical.
Working on a rooftop provided some unique challenges. Firstly, access was limited. And although our program was compacted due to a delayed start, it was vital the team worked safely while meeting the competion deadline.
High-density foam blocks with a lightweight base were added to the foundations to support the landscape structures and reduce vibration from the car park. The construction team worked strategically to mitigate risk, adopting a methodology that included working backward, from the farthest side of the site towards the access point, to reduce the time the trucks and heavy machinery were on the rooftop structure.
Sustainable landscape elements included a bespoke steel curved Arbor, consisting of 16 arches with solar film to power the neon sensor lights. Designed by Newcastle University, the solar film provided a flexible option to solar panels, allowing for application to curved structures.
