The upgrade was part of the parklands extension in preparation for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Glascott Landscape and Civil Queensland undertook construction of a new timber viewing deck and soft landscape to the surrounds. The scope of works included earthworks to reshape beach sand dunes, concrete walls, tree removal and environmental controls, constructing the new deck and shelter, furniture and electrical and hydraulic services. The improved open space enhanced the spectator experience during the Games and provides protection of the surrounding mangrove system.
